April 28, 2020 Dear Parents and Guardians, No one expected our 2019-2020 school year to end so abruptly. No one anticipated our students not being able to return to school this year. We are dealing with a situation that is unprecedented, and one that I hope we never face again. I want you to know that during this incredibly difficult time I have seen some of the greatest acts of kindness from our staff, our students, and our community. Our Bulldog family has stood firm and solid throughout this pandemic. By now you know the governor has stated our buildings will remain closed for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. This poses some unique challenges for our district; however, we have worked diligently to set plans in place to make these last weeks of school the very best for our students! School Calendar: The school calendar has been altered. Our students will finish school two days earlier than planned. The last day of instruction for QISD will be Wednesday, May 20th. May 21st and 22nd will become staff workdays. You will find an updated calendar included in this correspondence. Bulldog Academy May 4th through May 15: During the weeks of May 4th and May 11th we will be participating in THE BULLDOG ACADEMY! This is a two-week instructional unit where all our students grade pre-k through 12 will focus their time on learning real life skills. Students will pick three skills each week to focus on. There will be a short survey for the student to complete each week (parents may help complete the survey for younger students). We want our kids to gain an understanding of the importance of real-world skills. There will be no NEW ASSIGNMENTS during our Bulldog Academy for any classes. Students are encouraged to use extra time to complete any assignments that are outstanding during this two-week period. May 18: All assignments are due either through Google Classroom or the drop box located at the elementary school. May 19 and 20: These days will be used to return Chromebooks, library books, calculators and any text books for all campuses. We will also return any items your child may have left in their locker, or supplies left in the classroom. (See attached schedule for the date and time for your campus/grade level). May 22nd Graduation Join us live at 7:00 pm on the Quitman ISD YouTube Channel to see our 2020 graduates receive their diplomas. OTHER AWARDS and BANQUETS: The teachers, staff, and administrators are working tirelessly to provide as much to our students as possible. We will not be able to replicate every single event that was planned for spring. We will do our best to capture digitally as many special memories as possible. If there is a special presentation planned you should receive notice from your child’s principal, teacher, coach, or director. Please follow us on FACEBOOK if you do not already. You can always find events posted on our website at www.quitmanisd.net. Report Cards: Report Cards will be mailed home the week of May 26th. Grading Policies: You will find a copy of the grading policies initiated during the pandemic included in this correspondence. Summer School: Students needing summer school for credit recovery will have the opportunity to complete their courses via online over the summer. Information pertaining to summer school will be mailed separately to students that need credit recovery. Advancement to Next Grade Level: Students who have met the criteria for grade level advancement will move to the next grade level. Students who have not met the criteria for grade level advancement will be notified in writing, and by phone by May 15th. Your child’s principal will be available to answer questions once you are notified. Registration for 2020-2021: Online registration for the 2020-2021 school year will be available soon. Please check our website frequently. We will also post on Facebook, and utilize our notification system once registration is open. Pre-K and Kindergarten Round-up: The forms for Pre-K and Kindergarten Round-up will be available online at www.quitmanisd.net and also posted to our Facebook Website by May 4th. These forms can be completed and dropped off in our drop box located at the elementary school. You will receive notification by June 15 as to your qualification status. Other IMPORTANT information:  Monday May 18th will be the last day of food distribution at the elementary school.  If you owe money to the cafeteria, we urge you to make a payment on that today. If you can’t pay in full please pay some amount on that charge. You can pay online by going to www.quitmanisd.net to PARENT RESOURCES to LINKS to LUNCH MONEY NOW.  Library fines are being waived for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.  Library books not returned will be subject to full replacement cost. Last Friday, April 17, Texas Governor Abbott issued an executive order stating that all school facilities in the state of Texas would stay closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. We will continue to provide our #StayAtHome #LearnAtHome curriculum and instructional program. We will be sending out additional information this week pertaining to the school calendar, end of year events, and at home instruction.

QJH Grading Guidelines During COVID-19 Why Are We Changing Our Grading Guidelines? We understand this global pandemic has had overwhelming impacts on everyone. We want to balance expectations for teachers and families and to extend GRACE to ALL our QJH family during this time of crisis. We understand that this shift to remote learning has changed the instructional impact and we recognize the need to preserve the integrity of our grading system. We understand that students have varying levels of support and instructional resources at home. Why Not Just Use Pass/Fail? Pass/Fail does not provide all students with the opportunity to raise their overall semester average/GPA. By including numerical grades earned during the fourth nine-week grading period, students have an opportunity to raise a previous low or failing grade from the third nine- weeks and/or the first semester. What Are the New Secondary Grading Guidelines? No fewer than 8 grades and no more than 10 grades per course during the fourth nine- weeks. Teachers may still give some ungraded assignments, and there is no limit to those. All grades will be weighted the same in the gradebook. Any grade that is significant (test/project-like) will count twice in the gradebook. All assignments will have a one-week timeframe to be completed / turned-in. There will be an additional week period of grace beyond the initial deadline. Teachers may choose to deduct points for late work beyond the grace period. The Fourth Nine-Week average will not negatively impact student averages/GPA. The 2020 spring semester average will be determined by the 3rd nine-week grade and the higher of the 3rd or 4th nine-week grade. There will be no final exams this semester. What About STAAR End of Course (EOC) tests? Grades 3-8 STAAR and EOCs will not be given this spring or summer. Normally, passing the STAAR test is a state SSI requirement for 8th grade. However, this school year only, students will NOT have to complete their corresponding STAAR tests, provided they earn course credit during the 2019-2020 school year. I Still Have Questions. Who Do I Contact? As always, parents and students should reach out to teachers, counselors or principals as needed. Email is best as QISD facilities are closed. All staff emails are available at: www.quitmanisd.net. Choose the and click JH on the Staff link. For general questions about QISD, call or text 903.497.7323. For questions or troubleshooting regarding Chromebooks or Kajeet HotSpots, call or text 903.497.7719. If you have extenuating circumstances of any kind with regard to your assignments, internet access or other specific or personal considerations, please send an email to JHOutreach@quitmanisd.net.
