John Herring, Corporal Herring and student in hallway

Special guest Corporal Tobie Herring is visiting campus today and speaking to students about his experiences in the United States Marine Corp. Currently stationed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. Corporal Herring spoke with students about life after high school. He spoke of trying out different jobs before deciding he wanted to pursue a career in the military as a firefighter. Corporal Herring had known for some time that he wanted to be a firefighter; but after speaking to a Marine, and then a recruiter, he decided to pursue that dream in the military.

Corporal Herring spoke of all the challenges of basic training, and the physical and mental toughness he learned so that he could succeed. He also spoke highly of the camaraderie he established with his fellow recruits. Corporal Herring told students about the certifications he needed to do his job and how those certifications will help him gain employment someday outside of the Marines. For now, though, Corporal Herring plans to re-sign and stay in the Marines at least a few more years. He hopes to be stationed in Japan someday so he can learn the culture and eat authentic Japanese food. Until then, Corporal Herring is happy to be stationed at Camp Pendleton.
