QHS Academic UIL Students

QHS students recently competed at the UIL Academic District Meet held on March 23rd and 24th at the Region 8 Service Center in Pittsburg. Quitman had a very strong showing, with 11 students qualifying to advance to Regionals.

Students who will be attending the UIL Regional Academic Meet on April 23rd at Tyler Junior College are:

  • Justin Matthews in Calculator Applications 1st place at district - Coach Hannah McKinney
  • Christian Adamson in Literary Criticism   3rd place and 2nd place in Copy Editing, Coach - Angela Brown
  • Michael Hipp - 2nd place Number Sense, Coach - Hannah Mckinney
  • Rebecca Wood in Social Studies 1st place, Coach - Shelley Chance
  • Rebecca Wood, Ethan Presley, Delaney Flannagan and Jazmin Rojas—1st place Social Studies team, Coach - Shelley Chance
  • Emilee Baker - Ready Writing 3rd place - Coach, Marianne Midkiff
  • Diego Osornio 3rd place Mathematics - Coach, Hannah McKinney
  • Sara Cross 3rd place Accounting - Coach, Hannah McKinney
  • Alexus Richey 2nd place Feature Writing - Coach, Angela Brown

  • Newswriting - Dalton Poppenhusen 4th place, Ruby Bringard 5th place
  • Accounting - Diego Osornio-Rios - 6th place, 2nd place team- Sara Cross, Diego Osornio-Rios, Malaysia Lankford
  • Prose Interpretation - Maycie Miller 4th place
  • Computer Science - Mitchell Fry 5th place, Christian Stewart 6th place, Hunter Hart 7th place, Mitchel Fry, Christian Stewart, Hunter Hart—2nd place team
  • Computer Applications- Ethan Presley 6th place
  • Informative Speaking - Ben Barnett 4th place
  • Persuasive Speaking - Faith Council 5th place

Coaches for academic UIL teams included David Cross, Angela Brown, Marianne Midkiff, Deborah Woodruff, Hannah McKinney, Hunter Ballard and director, Shelley Chance.

 

The UIL Academics team and coaches have worked hard this year.  Earlier this semester, Emilee Baker and Rebecca Wood advanced to state in CX Debate, coached by Hunter Ballard. This was the first time in several years that a team has advanced from Quitman. According to UIL Coach Shelley Chance students are continuing to work hard to get ready for the upcoming Regional competition.  “We are preparing and hope for success there as well,” said Chance.
