School Board Recognition Month Logo

The month of January has been recognized by Governor Greg Abbott as "School Board Recognition Month." In his official proclamation, Abbott stated that, "School boards are an integral fabric woven into the tapestry of the Texas education system.  They work with parents, education professionals, and community members to create successful learning environments for our students."

We are honored here at Quitman ISD to celebrate our trustees for their tireless commitment and dedication to our whole district, and especially to our students.  Our trustees are elected by the community. Their essential job duties include establishing policies and responsibly stewarding the district's annual budget.

“School boards are essential to a strong public education system,” Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Executive Director Dan Troxell said. “They provide the local governance and oversight that makes it possible for school districts to serve students, including establishing a strategic plan, adopting policies, approving a budget and selecting and evaluating a superintendent. It’s fitting that we celebrate them in January as their leadership is key to the success of every school district in Texas.”

Quitman is fortunate to have a very active school board. Not only do they successfully manage all of their responsibilities as trustees; they are also active in the community. You will often find trustees at extracurricular activities supporting students. They are also active within the community providing outreach in many ways. For instance, Ms. Jane Herring "un-retired" her sewing machine in 2020, providing hundreds of free masks to anyone in the community that needed them. Other members are active in church and civic groups.
