QJH Grading Guidelines During COVID-19 Why Are We Changing Our Grading Guidelines? We understand this global pandemic has had overwhelming impacts on everyone. We want to balance expectations for teachers and families and to extend GRACE to ALL our QJH family during this time of crisis. We understand that this shift to remote learning has changed the instructional impact and we recognize the need to preserve the integrity of our grading system. We understand that students have varying levels of support and instructional resources at home. Why Not Just Use Pass/Fail? Pass/Fail does not provide all students with the opportunity to raise their overall semester average/GPA. By including numerical grades earned during the fourth nine-week grading period, students have an opportunity to raise a previous low or failing grade from the third nine- weeks and/or the first semester. What Are the New Secondary Grading Guidelines? No fewer than 8 grades and no more than 10 grades per course during the fourth nine- weeks. Teachers may still give some ungraded assignments, and there is no limit to those. All grades will be weighted the same in the gradebook. Any grade that is significant (test/project-like) will count twice in the gradebook. All assignments will have a one-week timeframe to be completed / turned-in. There will be an additional week period of grace beyond the initial deadline. Teachers may choose to deduct points for late work beyond the grace period. The Fourth Nine-Week average will not negatively impact student averages/GPA. The 2020 spring semester average will be determined by the 3rd nine-week grade and the higher of the 3rd or 4th nine-week grade. There will be no final exams this semester. What About STAAR End of Course (EOC) tests? Grades 3-8 STAAR and EOCs will not be given this spring or summer. Normally, passing the STAAR test is a state SSI requirement for 8th grade. However, this school year only, students will NOT have to complete their corresponding STAAR tests, provided they earn course credit during the 2019-2020 school year. I Still Have Questions. Who Do I Contact? As always, parents and students should reach out to teachers, counselors or principals as needed. Email is best as QISD facilities are closed. All staff emails are available at: www.quitmanisd.net. Choose the and click JH on the Staff link. For general questions about QISD, call or text 903.497.7323. For questions or troubleshooting regarding Chromebooks or Kajeet HotSpots, call or text 903.497.7719. If you have extenuating circumstances of any kind with regard to your assignments, internet access or other specific or personal considerations, please send an email to JHOutreach@quitmanisd.net.

Why do we wear RED on Wednesdays?? Some students have asked what the RED shirts are for that many of the staff are wearing on Wednesdays. These shirts are in support of our troops that are deployed in various parts of our world, defending our freedom and keeping us all safe. Our own Coach Bevis’ husband, Adam, is in Korea, and as a staff, we are wearing these each Wednesday in support of him and his sweet family until he is able to come home. Coach Bevis, we stand behind you and appreciate the sacrifice you and your family make for our country. We encourage students who would like to join us by wearing a red t-shirt each Wednesday.

He spoke to the students about antisemitism and the importance of learning about the Holocaust in school, and the effects it has on today's society. Most importantly, the students learned that when it comes to identifying what race they're a part of, the correct answer is, the HUMAN RACE where we are encouraged to give respect & love to one another to eradicate hate.

Students were presented with the driving question, "Can you construct a basket with a secret compartment that will hide a fabric swatch?" The material list included: 10 Large Index cards, 8 small index cards, a piece of fabric, tape, and scissors. Students could use only the materials given to them and had to work against a time constraint of 30 minutes. They logged their design ideas and engineering data into a STEM project journal. So much fun in Mrs. Jeannie Hipp's 8th period PROS class. We exercised acts of kindness by participating in an interactive lesson using technology. Students found 10 kindness challenges posted on the wall throughout the JH campus. Each challenge contained a QR code in which they had to scan & discover a challenge to participate in. One challenge, was expressing kindness & gratitude towards a custodian. We have the best custodians at QJH! Of course, we had to take a picture! 📷️ Another challenge, for example, was putting a post-it note of inspiration on a locker for a friend.

Parents of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders: Just a reminder that the JH awards program will be held Friday, May 31 at 8:30am in the HS auditorium. If your child is receiving an award, you should have received a letter in the mail. However, the exception to that would be A Honor Roll, A/B Honor Roll, or perfect attendance. Letters were not mailed home for these accomplishments, since this information was only pulled a few days ago. If you are not sure if your child will be receiving an award, please call the JH office to make sure. We don't want you to miss your child being honored with an award!

Quitman ISD will cancel classes for Thursday, May 9th. The threat of additional rain overnight, and our inability to get buses to many of our students were major factors in this decision. We want to keep your kids safe. We will not have to make this day up. Have a restful day and stay safe.

Parents please be patient as we try to get your children home to you. Our buses are on their routes and going slow. We are also making sure there is a parent or an adult home before we leave the students.

Due to flooding QISD will be releasing students early. Parents may begin to pick their students up immediately. Buses will be boarding at approximately 1:30. If there is no parent or guardian at the house the students will be brought back to their home campus. If the bus can not safely get to your house your child will be brought back to their home campus. Parents that normally pick up their children need to pick them up at their normal pick up area.

The spring Robotics class visited The Waldo Way, a robotic Guernsey raw milk dairy farm right here in Wood county. Students learned about how the robot is able to recognize each cow, check the health of each cow, as well as check milk quality each time they milk. They learned about differences in commercial fairy milk and raw milk too. Ris Waldo and her son Trent were so welcoming and were even kind enough to let the students taste some of their products.
