Information from Superintendent

Dear QISD Families:

QISD, through a program with the National Free and Reduced Lunch Program, will offer free breakfast and lunch to ALL STUDENTS in 2020-2021! We have been approved for the next four years to provide this service. We know this will be very beneficial to families in our district.

To further assist our families, Quitman Elementary and Quitman Junior High have significantly shortened the list of school supplies students need to purchase. We are purchasing many of the regular items through a bulk order. The items on the list are the ones you see most often for a heavily discounted price during the back-to-school season, such as colored pencils, pencils, and glue. While we were unable to completely remove the supply list, we believe the reduction is significant and will help our families.

The school calendar has been revised. We believe that it is best for our community to keep our calendar as "normal" as possible. We also realize that we must be proactive and be prepared to miss some school days if necessary due to bad weather or COVID-19. For this reason, we have adjusted the start date from August 19 to August 17. You will also notice that the school day will be ten minutes longer in the 20-21 school year. This extra time each day will allow us to use days when necessary without having to recover them. (We call this bank minutes). In the event that the additional eight to ten built-in days is not enough, we have additional days that we can consider at the end of the year. We certainly hope we don't have to use them.

I know there are many questions about the 2020-2021 school year. We will give you more information at the end of the month or the beginning of July. Right now, we continue to work for a FULL START and ON TIME for 2020-2021!

You can find the updated calendar and supply list at www.quitmanisd.net

I look forward to another great year at QISD!

The Bulldogs wish you all the best,
